Dr Helena Linardou is a medical oncologist, Director of the 4th Oncology Clinic of Metropolitan Hospital, head of the Genetic Counselling and Hereditary Cancer service and head of the Clinical Trials Centre. She trained in Athens and London and works mainly on breast and lung cancer and on cancer genetics.

Education and specialisation

She graduated from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1989 and specialised in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, first in Athens and then in London, where she completed the training programme of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Radiologists as a Medical Oncologist in specialist oncology and haematology departments of the Hammersmith, Mount Vernon and Charing Cross hospitals.

    National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

  2. Training in Internal Medicine

    3rd Department of Internal Medicine, Agioi Anargyroi Cancer Hospital, Athens, then London.

  3. Doctoral thesis

    Three-year programme with scholarships from Greece and England at Hammersmith Hospital, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, University of London (Imperial College). PhD in Oncology awarded in April 1998.

  4. Senior Registrar

    Breast Unit of Charing Cross Hospital, taking part in all clinical and research activities. Eight years in London in total, with a particular focus on breast and lung cancer, hereditary cancer and molecularly targeted therapies.

  5. Specialist title and European certification

    Title in Medical Oncology in Greece and, in October, European Certification in Medical Oncology (ESMO board certified). Clinical Observer at the Breast Unit of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, under Dr Clifford Hudis.

  6. Cancer Genetics

    Specialised training course of the European Genetics Foundation, University of Bologna.

Clinical career

  1. Return to Greece

    Medical Oncologist, scientific associate at the 3rd Oncology Department of Agioi Anargyroi Cancer Hospital, Kifisia, then Consultant Oncologist at Euroclinic Athens and at the Breast Centre of the Leto hospital.

  2. 1st Oncology Clinic, Metropolitan Hospital

    Under the direction of Dr D. Bafaloukos, first as Senior Consultant and from May 2006 as Deputy Director.

  3. Foundation of the 4th Oncology Clinic

    Inspirer and founder of the 4th Oncology Clinic of Metropolitan Hospital, which she directs, and of the Clinical Trials Centre.

Research work and interests

Dr Linardou is an active member of medical societies in Greece and abroad and of research groups with a strong presence in clinical and translational research, such as the Hellenic Cooperative Oncology Group (HeCOG), with access to large international collaborative clinical trials and to new, pioneering anticancer treatments. She is the author of more than 50 original publications in international peer-reviewed journals, more than 100 presentations at international congresses and more than 30 chapters in scientific books, and is regularly an invited speaker at Greek and international congresses.
